Kinja'd!!!

Not my actual wrenches, mine are just barely rusty. Picture shamelessly stolen from GIS.

Anyone have any experience or old timer tricks for removing some spotty surface rust from sockets and wrenches. My tools got a little rusty from staying in my extraordinary terrible garage over the course of a few months. I think something mildly acidic should do the trick but I thought I’d ask all of you first.

Muriatic acid. Probably find lots of results online for what dilutions work best for what sort of rust. I know some bicycle restorers use dilutions of Oxalic acid weak enough that it doesn’t damage paint or decals, but will still eat surface rust off of old bike frames, that’s an alternative if you have extra time to spare.

white vinigar has been effective. they need a scrub after as the rust turns to a loose goo. and is pretty low on the potential harm scale. will either work or do nothing.

also really good for iddntifying every nick and scratch in your hands you didnt know you had

I’m getting some pretty good results from the electrolysis rig I’m currently using on this tank (update coming later this week, BTW).

But I also like MonkeyPuzzle’s suggestion of using white vinegar.

Muriatic will cause rust too, it’s how I weathered steel plate on my project.

I’ve wondered about iron chealation, evaporust. It takes off the rust and only the rust. Seems easy to get and just toss some in an old coffee can with your rusted parts and it should work. No first hand experience.

I saw that, seems overkill for my needs. I’m going to try white vinegar tomorrow.

I second the white vinegar. Works great. My mother-in-law soaks everything that's rusty and grimy in it and it does a great job.

I’ll try white vinegar first but if it doesn’t work I’ll get some muriatic acid to try.

Tractor supply (and many other stores) carry a product called Evaporust. It works fucking awesome! $16 a gallon. Just pour some in a pan + put you stuff in for like 24 hours. Rinse + good to go. The stuff is even biodegradable.

+1 on evaporust. I used it on my carburetor parts and it worked wonders. Reusable (a few times anyhow) and pretty affordable if I remember. Walmart sells it I think. Rust should just wipe off.

It’s just like an angle grinder, don’t put your fingers near it and you will be fine.

I’ve not had first hand experience, but someone posted the results of white vinegar a while back. Another trick I’ve heard of is using Coca-Cola. The phosphoric acid is good at taking off rust. It is sometimes used on old car parts as it’s effective but won’t destroy the part in the process.

Start cheap and work your way up, so if it was me I’d get a gallon of vinegar and start with that. If that doesn’t work try Coke, and if that doesn’t work try the Evaporust that people are talking about.

Can confirm, even a 50-Watt can do it if you aren’t in too much of a hurry.

+1 Naval Jelly (LocTite Naval Jelly Rust Remover)

more aggressive than vinegar or cola if those don’t work, but less drastic than muriatic acid. It’s another product that removes only the rust, and no scrubbing required iirc

I know, right? Sounds like it might be some sort of byproduct of indifferent personal hygiene lol
